My precious son turned 15 today! Originally expecting Tyler to be hospitalized for 5-6 months straight, his being home just in time for his birthday was a major blessing.
The day began inauspiciously with a trip to the lab for required blood work. The not-so-clean waiting room was packed with people – standing room only. Tyler graciously withstood both outright stares and furtive glances at his bald head and respirator mask, yet no one offered my son a seat. Over 90 minutes later, we were done.
Tyler shook off the experience and excitedly switched gears to his planned visit to Chapelgate: his first time at school since his first day of 10th grade on September 6th. Armed with Purell and an extra respirator mask, Tyler walked into the building, where he was excitedly embraced by both the student body and faculty. He was the guest of honor at a surprise birthday party in the cafeteria, complete with cake, gifts and balloons. When I picked Tyler up, he was exhausted, clearly having overdone it. But my son was positively beaming. One of the hardest parts of this journey for Tyler is being separated from his friends; this time was precious to him.
Tyler’s second party of the day occurred at our house this evening: attended by his local aunts, uncle and cousins, and of course Michelle and TJ. A very worn-out 15-year-old climbed into his bed that night, but with a smile on his face.
Blessed by this unexpected birthday at home? Very. Tomorrow Tyler heads back to the hospital for his second course of very toxic chemotherapy. We don’t know what the future holds, but are so grateful for the joys of each day.
