Since his incident this morning, Tyler thankfully is back to all but one of the same settings he had earlier this morning and has restabilized. He is having increased lung secretions, and they expect that all deep suctioning will cause similar incidents, so they will be prepared next time.
Ron and I met with the doctors, who are now certain that Tyler’s body is fighting something in addition to Idiopathic Pneumonia Syndrome. Off the dialysis (which cools the blood), he instantly started showing a fever again, despite being on steroids which often mask fevers. He also has developed a new rash, which looks to be viral or a drug reaction. He was positive for HHV-6, a very common virus that gets reactivated in bone marrow transplant patients. In Tyler’s case, they’re wondering if rather than being harmless, as it usually is, it is causing a viral pneumonia. So after a lot of consulting, they have decided to start him on a medication for this particular virus. It has its side effects, but everything has its risks at this point. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your prayers!
